I'm afraid I was. I didn't know that. Coming from Oxford, I am a big old snob when it comes to universities.

Eton and Oxford will be relocated to Blackpool and Bognor Regis leaving the other Universities with a chance of a bigger intake.

I live there, and actually find almost all the students very irritating.

Fascinating facts about Birmingham:

A massive system of canals was built to cope with the influx of traffic that resulted from the Industrial Revolution, so that Birmingham now has a more extensive canal network than Venice.

This is technically true:

According to Wikipedia Birmingham has 35 miles of canals, Venice only 26. However Venice’s area is 7.6 square kilometres compared with Birmingham’s 267 sq km. So Brum is 35 times bigger than venice, yet only has 1.3 times its canal length - not quite as impressive as you may think.

I used to live with three brummies, and coming from near Manchester we were always having the "second city" debate. The "more canals than venice" was a factoid that always grated me!

Tom Stoppard has a joke which is unfortunately about Edinburgh but which would work as well or better for Birmingham, concerning how it shouldn't be regarded as "the Venice of the North" so much as "the Rekjavik of the South".
