QI is that the island of Tobago was at one time under the rule of Latvia

Good Lord! I'm sure I'm not the only person who read that and thought "That can't be right".

But it pretty much is - Latvia (or, to be precise, the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia) had a Caribbean colony for about thirty years in the seventeenth century. It had a small possession in West Africa as well.

The early colonial history of Tobago is one of strong resitance from the Caribs and numerous abortive attempts of European powers to gain a foothold on the island.

Qi is that for a time the island was divided between the Courlanders (Latvians) and the Dutch.

Today Great Courland Bay and Little Courland Bay are testament to an interesting past.
