I suspect that the tea dance dates back to the anti-drink movements at the turn of the previous century, circa 1905, methodist revival in Wales & the begginings of the prohibition movement in the States.

yers...will continue to dig for that one. I have a funny feeling I read of one in somehting Russian - Checkov or Tolstoy or something - which would suggest it's older than that.

But like the theory of oppression. Will be back...
