I wouldn't normally post 2 in a row but...

Earlier today I drove around a large chunk of the eastern section of the A4174 from Filton to Warmley on my way to lunch in Marshfield with the Sunday house team from Dyrham Park. Link

[I was just writing about that!]

Indeed, I'm also familiar with the A4174, which is supposed to be Bristol's outer ring road. Actually it's the number that was assigned to a collection of half-finished projects over the last forty years or so, the latest of which (the South Bristol Link Road) only opened this January.

In no sense is it a full ring road. There's one dual-carriageway section running about a third of the way round the outskirts of the city, from Filton in the north to Hicks Gate in the south-east. Then it stops without any indication of the rest of the route, but if you follow the A4 for just over a mile towards the city centre, it starts again at Brislington. This section is mostly just a single carriageway running through the southern suburbs, until it gets to Hengrove and widens out to dual again, running up to a big roundabout.

And, if you're in the know, you can carry straight on at this roundabout, which will take you onto the new link road and eventually all the way round to the A370 near Long Ashton, in the south-west. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the people who put the signs up, and (last time I looked) traffic is still being directed along the old route, nearly a year later.

There is no conceivable possibility that the circuit will be completed, as to do so would involve building a new bridge across the Avon Gorge (amongst many other things). So at best Bristol has got about two-thirds of a ring road, with one "third" not properly connected to the other "third". I wouldn't mind but public transport is so bloody awful as well...

[EDIT: In fairness, I should say that the new link road has been designated as the route for the new MetroBus service due to start next year. It's also the route for the "A4" bus between Bath and Bristol Airport, which is pretty good.]

Sorry, rant over and back to the game!
