An interesting piece of general ignorance - Michael Fish was in a way right about a hurricane not striking Britain.

This is because tropical cyclones originate in the North Atlantic or North Pacific - not the North Sea. Therefore, what Fish wrongly predicted was in fact "The Great Storm of 1987".

in michael palin's diaries it says about said storm that the met office admitted it to be a hurricane. poetic licence? python hyperbole?

I do believe that we've done the Michael Fish thing to death before. Wikipedia deals with the issue in a satisfactory manner so I'll refer anyone to wiki if it is of interest.
