A hinney is the result of a horse stallion mating with a female donkey - a jenny, or burro or donkey ( a male donkey is a mule!).
If a male donkey breeds with a female horse ( mare), the result is a molly or a Mare mule!
All a bit of a mare's next if you get it wrong!

No it isn't. A male donkey is a jack*. A mule is the cross of a female horse and a male donkey.

*Hence the phrase, "it ain't worth jack shit"**.

**Possibly.

I think it's also a term of endearment in Northumbria, although possible with more links to the Scots 'hen'.

As in the traditional song, "D'ye ken Elsie Marley, hinny?"

Singin Hinnys are delicious, a kind of flat griddle scone with currants in, eaten with melted butter. Mmmmm..
