hegemony - leadership, predominance

Tsk. It's hierophant. From the Greek ta hiera, "sacred, holy", and phainein, "to show". Cf. hieroglyphics, meaning 'sacred carving'.

hegemony is leadership by apparent consent eg;

Man Utd* have a hegemony of the Premiership.

*or any other team as appropriate.


At least that is how it was defined to me back in Communication Studies at Uni.

Lengthier definitions of hegemony are available but I suppose I'd say that hegemony is the leadership displayed by a principal or predominant member, body or organisation.

ManU don't lead by consent, they lead because they beat everyone else.

Either way, this is the wrong sense of "lead".

Or to put it in a Marxist/Gramscian context, a hegemonic society is one in which the ruling class controls the masses through coercion rather than force, and thus the masses are content in their position.
