Well now, I know I'm supposed to provide a short paragraph containing the reason/s why I'm recommending these books, but I'm late for work so I'll have to fill out that part later. ;)

The Lunar Men: A Story of Science, Art, Invention & Passion by Jenny Uglow (ISBN 0571216102) - a brilliant book about a bunch of 18th century scientists, thinkers, and polymaths, such as Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgwood and James Watt.

The Island of Lost Maps by Miles Harvey (ISBN 0753813157) - the story of Gilbert Bland, a thief who stole rare maps from libraries, also contains much fascinating info on explorers, cartography and books.

The Redress of Poetry by Seamus Heaney (ISBN 0571175376) - in some ways, Heaney is even better as a critic than as a poet.
