How many sheep were there on Noah's Ark? Well, it may have been seven, but some translations say seven pairs - which seems more sensible to me.

But what about the ones kept as food for the carnivores?

And what about the cleaning rota?

You may like to know that there are two other (more comprehensive) threads on this question:

Ark in the Knock Knock Forum and Noah's Ark in the Quite Interestrings Forum.

This annoyed me because Genesis is actually ambiguous on the subject.

Certainly in Genesis 7:2-3 the Lord says to take seven of every clean beast (and every fowl) and two of everything else, but earlier Genesis 6:19-20 simply says two of everything.

When it came to actually filling the ark it seems (Genesis 7:15) that the animals did actually all go in "two and two". So it seems that God gave contradictory instructions and Noah just picked one version to follow. So likely there were two sheep, though there may have been seven.

The point we were making was that 999 people in 1000 would just say "two", because that's what they were told in nursery school and they've never thought to question it or look into it. If we can get that number down to 998, we're happy.

Of course, the flip side is that that one person now thinks marsupials aren't mammals, so he's only really breaking even overall ...
