The Big Man is dead.

Clarence Clemons, best known as the saxophone player in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, has died in Florida at the age of 69.

I thought he did not look well in the coverage of the Glastonbury appearance 2 years ago.
He also put in a few surreal appearances in the spoof thriller Fatal Instinct.
Sad now.

And Brian Haw was one of those quietly heroic people I admire greatly

I remember talking to him in Parliament Square some years ago now, I think probably in 2002 before I came to the US.

I spoke to Brian Haw once too - he had some distincty odd views on some subjects (whiich I won't be selling to any tabloid journalists).

Do you want this L or not?

I expect Brian Haw probably came away from the conversation thinking you had distinctly odd views on some subjects as well.

Probably won't mean much to many of you, but I'll record here that Charlotte Joko Beck died on 15-6-2011. To be honest, I thought she must've died quite a while ago.

An exchange with an interviewer (Donna Rockwell) that I particularly liked:

Rockwell: Please complete this sentence for me - “The one thing awareness has taught me that I want to share with all people is that…”

Beck: I don’t want to share anything with all people.

Rockwell: Who do you want to share with?

Beck: Nobody. I just live my life. I don’t go around wanting to share something. That’s extra.

Rockwell: Could you talk about that a little bit?

Beck: Well, there’s a little shade of piety that creeps into practice. You know, “I have this wonderful practice, I want to share it with everyone.” There’s an error in that. You could probably figure it out yourself.

Rockwell: I think that’s something I need to learn.

Beck: You and I know there’s nothing that’s going to make me run away faster than somebody who comes around and wants to be helpful. You know what I mean? I don’t want people to be helpful to me. I just want to live my own life.

Rockwell: Do you think you share yourself?

Beck: Yeah, but who’s that?

I'm sad about that - I loved their music in the sixties. Norma Waterson is still going strong as a singer, though has been physically very unwell in the last year.

Thanks for linking the obituary, samivel.

i like watching Columbo so it's a shame that Peter Falk died.

Peter Falk will always be associated with Columbo but his TV and film career stretched back to 1957. In the film Robin and the Seven Hoods (a spoof up-dated version of the classic tale) he played Guy Gisborne in a cast that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis jr.

My favorite role of Falk's was in The Princess Bride, aww.
