The unbearable vegetable dish your grandmother insists upon making "especially for you" every time you visit, despite you never having expressed the slightest fondness for it.

Chunky pea soup (fine) with frozen mixed veg (not fine), my Nazi granny for her son in law, i.e. my dad. Can we widen the definition of that one?

Of course.

Do Nazi mothers-in-law tell you about all the starving children in Ethiopia when you decline the sprouts?

They aren't Aryan children, so guess. Also, my dad is not one to ever decline things. He grins and bears it no matter what.

Just like my dad, who did tell us about the children starving in Ethiopia, however. I suppose as a professor of Developing Economy and a prominent advocate of Limits to Growth, he had a duty to do so. Still, as a growing lad with no inclination to sweets, my mom argued lenience towards my tendency to put just a layer too much on my sandwiches. And I always finished them.

In our house I was the guilty food waste conscience. When I was seven or eight years old we had to sell UNICEF postcards in school and of course our teacher told us all about the poor kids in Africa who were starving cos there was no rain to feed the crops and all that, and so when after lunch my mom wanted to throw out some leftovers I looked at her very seriously and told her to "think of the poor inhabitants of the desert". Said poor inhabitants of the desert have been trotted out on every single occasion of possible food waste since and probably will be until the entire proud clan of McShortarse has attained the status of ex-humans. I guess at least I have something going for me there in that I was seven and definitely meant well...

Brabsterdorran (n)

The kind of stomach upset that causes your visit to a public convenience to be very lengthy indeed, as your activities are accompanied such godawful odour and squeaking/pooting sounds that you feel unable to leave until closing time.
