Some say Vatican City, others say Monaco, it may infact be neither, but if it is neither, then what is it?

And also why is Vatican City, called Vatican City, if it is, infact, a country, why is it not called: Vatican Country, or not just: Vatican?

(I don't really care about the answer to the second question, it's just something for you to ponder (In a: What's the sound of one hand clapping? Sort of way.)

Given that Monaco has an area of 1.95 square kilometres and The Vatican City has an area of 0.44 square kilometres, it's Vatican City that's the smallest country in the world. :-)

As to why it's Vatican City, whoever-built-and-named-it-knows. I certainly dont'.

Well, actually it's State of the Vatican City. And it's really quite simple, it's a city-state. That is: an independent country whose territory consists solely of a single city.

Other examples are:
Monaco
Singapore
and (until 1997) Hong Kong

To some extend even the City of London could be seen as a city-state given its unique status.

----

As for the smallest country: We have dealt with ficticious countries like Lovely and Seaworld already somewhere else on this board. Just in case you had those in mind.

Just maybe it's the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta - upon which nation we already have a thread starting at post 100843.

What about the sea-forts/oil rigs that are countries - and those flats people declare as independent states?

They are micronations.

I originally thought that whales survived by eating micronations - but that aside...

Isn't micronation just another word for "small country": As in "What's the smallest country in the world?"?

Yay - I win!

It's not exactly a country. It's a pseudo-country.

I never trust anything Wikipedia says. Why? Here's why:

Watch it all the way through, not just the bit on Wikipedia, 'cause it's so funny I was in pain with laughter.

I thought we'd had a thread about this before because I came up with Sealand but someone said it didn't count. Will see if I can find it (the thread, not Sealand).

That's the reason why I don't trust Lenny Henry - he was misquoting wiki. It's all correct - and he's too lazy to update his video...

What kind of fool looks hisself up in wiki... and then doesn't correct it. And then tells the world what an idiot he is. That would be the spouse of the Vicar of Dibley... I guess.

(where's the irony smiley when you need it?)

Vatican City is not recognised by the UN (as you can often see on the TV show Pointless) unlike Monaco, which technically makes Monaco the smallest. This is to stop it voting on resolutions at UN meetings.
