I know the Guardian is infamous for spelling mistakes, hence private eye call it "The Grauniad"

The Daily Telegraph is called the Torygraph because of the right-wing influences.

The Daily Mail is called "The Daily Wail" because of its doom preaching.

a) Is there a newspaper that isn't ridiculed in some way?

b) What are the nicknames (if any) of some of the other popular newspapers like the Sun, the Mirror, The Times etc?

The Sun = The Scum
The Star = The Tarts
The Sport = porn for top shelf cowards

Two of my local free papers...
The Informer = The Grass
The Leader = The Fuhrer

The Torygraph has now become the Mailygraph due to it's increasingly tabloid content

The Dily Express - The Daily Express (because they continue to print stories about Princess Diana).

Yes, there's that famous newspaper that only ever prints factual, balanced, well-researched journalism and never biases a story to push a particular political agenda or to increase sales.

No, wait. Hang on. That newspaper doesn't actually exist.

Oh well, I guess the answer is "no" then.

What about the FT? How would that be ridiculed?

The Times did today by pointing out that it had 84% more business readers than the FT.

Probably because the Times is a smaller size and therefore easier to read on the loo :-)

According to their website, the FT is pink because it is "a distinguishing trademark to set itself apart from other daily news publications."

According to Wikipedia (although this is not referenced, so if anyone can find a source, that would be great), another reason why it is pink is because pink paper is cheaper than white.

And on the tube, don't forget. there's nothing funny than someone trying to look all serious and professional with their pink broadsheet only to fail dismally and disappear in a monsoon of creased and crumpled paper.

I've also observed people on particulalry busy trains forced to study closely the same quarter page for up to 15 minutes as they were not in a position where turning the page was at all possible. Lots of fun.

Or - since that fiasco of fessing up to their sources - The Indefensible

Apparently this once appeared in The Guardian:
Quote:
We apologize for the error in last week's paper in which we stated that Mr. Arnold Dogbody was a defective in the police force. We meant, of course, that Mr. Dogbody is a detective in the police farce.

Wikipedia seems to think that the tale of the paper once spelling its own name as The Gaurdian is just a myth, alas.
