I think it would be quite fun to have a points system so each use may gain or lose points based on the Quite Interestingess of their posts.

That would be unnecessarily competitive, unbecoming of these forums.

I don't think it would. I've seen similar systems in place on other forums and none have become competitive at all.

We already have quite an effective system - the interesting threads (and hence those containing the most interesting posts) tend to go to the top of the pile when you click on "view posts since last visit".

It's a bit pointless to single out a user's specific posts for interestingness - who would judge it?

Did they vote you out?
Or is the atmosphere here better?

Perhaps the difference is down to the lack of a points system?

I like the idea of points - because what do points mean??

Users would judge whether they would want to give a point to the user for his post or not. In fact it doesn't work too differently from the Prestige or Praise/Smite system that comes basic with most forum packages these days :)

I just thought it would be a fun idea :D

yeah - but we like to slag each other off from time to time on this forum which would screw up any formalised points system. (btw - that Posital's an eejit and he don kno nuffink about physics).

A points system of the kind James suggests has actually been discussed before. IIRC one of the QI staffers floated the idea, probably nearer three years ago than two, and then as now most people were not in favour.

The only mechanism I can think of to do such a thing would be a Facebook-style thumbs up or thumbs down that tallied up approval/disapproval, and that's a fairly crude measure. I don't think it's worth it, personally.

you could always have a phone poll I suppose? (oh god, please don't take that seriously)

Only if I can have the premium-charge number routed directly through to my house and rake in the profits thereof.

Granted - so long as you take the calls at your house as well. (You haven't thought this through have you Jenny?)

What are automatic telephone answering machines for?

If you were going to have a phone poll, then surely it would be suze that has to do all of the answering. There's little point in phoning an English person in America when you're looking for a poll.
