I think Pullman's definition of a daemon was different from the general understanding of a familiar. The familiar and the human can actually live apart from each other, can't they?

Can fish be daemons, I wonder?

Wouldn't they... urm... Anti-drown, or something?

You'd always have to be carrying a fishbowl with you, within about 5 meters or so or you'd get in serious trouble...

Damn - I knew there was a snag there somehow. Maybe I could have a dolphin instead?

There's nothing to say it couldn't swim through the air.

The dolphin could be diving in and out of the ground, like that car advert...

Mostly: I can't see the picture in the post either, but I can if I paste "http://www.artrenewal.org/images/artists/h/Holbein_Hans/small/museum/
Holbien_the_Younger_Portrait_of_a_Lady_with_a_Squirrel_and_a_Starling.jpg"
in my address bar. (But not if I click on that link.)

(Edited to make the line easier to cut and paste.)

(Edited again in an attempt to reduce the width of the thread, but I bet it's irrevocably stretched.)

Yes, sorry - I seem to have majorly messed up on the pics.

Still, that woman is pictures with both a bird and a squirrel. Maybe hers is meant to be the squirrel, or maybe it's the bird... or perhaps she just nicked someone elses.

But remember in the books the witches had daemons which acted like familiars. I am quite worried as I can't think of any creature which describes my soul, which I always pictured as my bedroom. It's even got a piercing wound in it's side which I'm starting to recover from following what would seem a meaningless incident, but I still can't imagine walking around with a room behind me.
