At the end of tonight's programme (Film), Mr Fry told a story involving P T Barnum. He said that P T exhibited 'a lion, a tiger, a panther and a lamb' as a tableau called 'The Happy Family'. What was the panther that Mr Fry was referring to? TBOGI states on p225 that there is no such thing as 'a' panther.

That's been mentioned before grannie (and I've put my apostrophes in all the right places this time - just for you).

They are a type of leopard, you can still see the marking (I won't say spots because I know someone will say otherwise :} ).

After all the pronunciation stuff on here at the moment I seriously thought you were going to claim they were Fanthers. :P

I've pulled out my BoGI for some close examination.

After all the interesting stuff*, it says that people using the word are usually referring to either a Black Leopard (Asia/Africa) or Black Jaguar (South America).

So I think the answer to your question is very likely to be one of these.

*Which is that "There is no such thing as *a* panther", i.e. there is more than one type. It goes on to explain that the 4 types of big cat are all scientifically called Panthera something, and that the Greek word Panthera means all creatures, real or imaginary.

There is only one panther...

Made by de Tomaso, a very pretty car.

There's a 2007 Concept Panthera too:

Which may or may not interest you! It doesn't sound like it's likely to be built either way.

I read a short review of the De Tomaso Pantera once which concluded;
"Elvis shot his"
