I've not seen one - but believe there is/was one in Chapultepec Zoo. The name comes from the Nahuatl for dog.

It's also mexican slang for kids/youths - "pinches ixcuintles" being commonly cited as the purpatrators of most minor crimes/vandalism.

They're very expensive to buy (possibly illegal?) and are quite a status symbol.

I think this is a picture of one:

Can anyone verify this received wisdom - google is letting me down?

Perhaps if you looked under a different spelling? A google for 'Mexican hairless dog' throws up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Hairless_Dog , which bears the markedly similar name Xoloitzcuintle .

Wow, thanks Jenny - never heard it called that - I'll do some digging and find out why.

Xolotlan itself is the Aztec god of life and death, which was commonly associated with monstrous figures, the word also means "monster."

Ixcuintle = dog.

So it's a monster-dog!! Cripes!

Cripes! So it's an actual recognised breed.

Thanks for the link - the descriptions give too much detail for my liking - nice pix.

And welcome.
