how closely related are shrew mice and rats?

Unfortunately Shakespeare's follow-up The Domestication of the Mouse was not such a big hit in the days before sequels were so common.

There are several species of venomous shrews. The poisonous saliva is secreted from submaxillary glands, through a duct which opens at the base of the lower incisors, where the saliva flows along the groove formed by the two incisors, and into the prey.

I don't think they'd be in the immediate family. Maybe distant cousins or something.

So it should be possible for them to marry without causing raised eyebrows at the post office.

According to this shrews should be more closely related to moles and hedgehogs than rats and mice:

Note also that Elephant Shrews and Tree Shrews are equally distant from true shrews.
