Probably it was being edited while you were posting. I think.

It was there before I posted; which is why I posted! Has the forum logic changed?

Edit: test

Edit: no

Edit: maybe someone posted after then deleted it.

I don't think the original post necessarily disappears while it's being edited - it's just replaced by the edited version.

I wondered that too Dave. Normally only get an "edited" auto message if there's later posts. One of life's little mysteries.

He made it do that because I posted something after bob, but then saw it was exactly the same information as in bob's post, so deleted it.

Thank you all for the helpful suggestions.

I shall try them out.

But watch out for some strangely quoted posts in the near future!!

I always wondered what this one did

Edit: It's not immediately obvious but that's the [list] button. Apparently it just indents things.

Which raises the question - how do you delete a post?

If you view it immediately after you've posted it, there'll be a small blue X under the Edit button. Click that and you can delete it. I'm not sure how long the X sticks around, probably until anyone makes a post after you.

That's correct. Once there's been a reply to your post you can't delete it - a moderator can, but will be reluctant to do so unless there's a good reason.

Tut - such inexactitude. Surely you mean once there's been a further post to the thread - not necessarily a reply (or even response) to your post. B minus I'm afraid there suze.

Or you can "edit" it to say "." as many of the users who have left have done.

You can indeed do that, but we'd really very much rather that people didn't - it can unbalance the discussion.

If you realise that one part of your post would have better omitted, then go back and edit by all means - although where possible, try to be sensitive to later discussion which may have referred to your post. If it's really essential that your post be deleted in its entirety, then feel free to ask a moderator to do that - but this isn't a thing that the moderators would want to be asked to do too often.

for all my faults I've never (as far as I know) deleted or post-edited my posts.

I agree with suze here - once it's been said (however much it might be regretted) - leave it alone. Retract it, apologise for it, but deleting it is something best left to the Mandelsonian/Blair historical anomaly tendency.
