I haven't been a forum user very long so if this enquiry belongs in the "bleedin' obvious" category please accept my apologies in advance.

Sometimes when opening a topic, especially one that's been running for a while, I'll go back to the first page to see what started the thread off.

This first page always seems to open half-way down which rather defeats the object but clicking on to another page and then back again sorts it out.

It's only a minor point but is it the way the pages are set up to work or is it my ham-fisted navigation?

When you click on a thread title, it shows the 15 most recent posts. If the thread has 22 posts, it will appear as though you have joined the thread mid-way through the first page, since there are 15 posts per page.

So basically click on the little numbers straight away.

Also, if it's a thread that's been going for quite a while, the first x number of posts may well have been culled anyway, so the thread appears to start half-way through a conversation.

That only tends to be the long chatty threads though. Anything of real value is preserved. I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Since the question has been raised and answered (to the satisfaction of the poster) shouldn't this thread qualify for deletion now?

I do not believe that the question has been answered to the satisfaction of the poster, nor that the problem has been solved to the satisfaction of much of the membership.

I need to find a way to always start reading a thread from start=0, regardless of how old and/or active it is. I know that phpBB supports this option from having served as administrator on other phpBB sites. Unfortunately, the administrators here don't yet understand how important it is to be able to join a conversation from its beginning and not from some arbitrary place in the middle.

Can a moderator here please escalate this problem so that we may choose our preferred behavior from the Profile page?

Considering that the poster hasn't posted here in well over seven years, I think you might be making an assumption there.

Not meaning to start a flame war here, but prior to posting I looked at the OP's latest comment and dutifully clicked on the link within. Unfortunately, the link went to a 404 page, so I am still unable to discern what bit of magic sent the OP away, whether happily, complacently or resignedly.

I do believe that many members went away resigned to alter the address line each and every time to invoke start=0, despite the fact that the option to always start from zero or always start from newest can be provided to users on our Profile page.

Having just joined this forum, and wishing to exercise the courtesy of reading each interesting thread in its entirety, whether I choose to add a comment or not, I find it frustrating to have to use a workaround instead of being able to set a parameter that is readily available in phpBB.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but my understanding is that the phpBB was modified for the forum, and if that is the case, I suspect that it's not running the latest release, but the one that the mods were made to. The copyright notice on the index page refers to 2001 and 2002, so it's quite possible that the option you want isn't in the version being used here.

Perhaps the administrator will pop in and comment further.

I do know that, given that it's been raised a few times over the years and the forum hasn't changed, that the chances of it changing now are pretty slim.

The issue is simply this. This forum is run on a shoestring due to the charitable beneficence of the QI fraternity. This applies to both the time and effort of the Elven and Peredhil folk and the money to fund its server space.

Server space is finite, so as the content of the forum grows it is necessary to periodically cull the older posts from the forum. As QI threads are free-range (the Elven having a strong moral abhorrence for commercialised forced battery-threading) there can be no hard and fast rules for what gets culled.

But some threads have been running since before the forging of the Five Rings and are mostly just conversations and banter between the individuals at the time that have no enduring value (>99% of my contributions will be in that category) so there is no justifiable case for the cost of preserving them. So they are highly likely to be prioritised in the culling. It becomes a choice between culling the WHOLE thread (which may include a current conversation) or just trimming the ancient bits. Usually the Elven choose the latter as the lesser of two weavils.

0.07 supplied,

PDR

I think you missed the point there. The complaint is not that posts get culled (the user is new, they'd not have a clue if some posts had been deleted). The issue is that when you click on a thread from the index page, it doesn't take you to the very first page of the thread. That is unrelated to server space, but may well be related to shoe-string budgets.
