It's the names that slay me. From today's offerings alone:

Putter I. Jitney
Pheromone G. Repulsive (who posts from the unlikely address of sunlit@catholicdirectory.com, considering he's peddling Cialis)
Coyote F. Purgative

More names from this afternoon's emails:

Isle U. Segovia
Stormy Brewster (not too bizarre that one) - although the email is entitled 'This could fix your entire relationship or marriage. collapsible'

Rapscallions S. Popgun

Who thinks these things up? Or do they just open a dictionary at random?

It seems to me that a simple applet (as I believe small computer programs are called) is used to choose two random nouns from an online dictionary, separated by a random single letter.

I'm just looking forward to Cobblers B Bullshit or Spam Z Timewaster, either of which could easily crop up given time.

What on earth does it mean to be 419d?

Is spam the same for everyone? I get ads for Cialis (a Viagra clone), cheap software, and logo/website design services. Only those three. It always comes to addresses which I have never used (info@domain_name.co.uk), and it always has those randomly-generated names attached. For a while I added the senders to my "junk senders" list, but the list only recognised a few of them as repeat senders and arbitrarily added to itself several friends who were not spammers. I suppose I get 2 or 3 spam messages a day. Is this typical?

I don't really mind, but last week I accidentally deleted a message from my friend Time Q Spamwaster without reading it, and I think he may have been offering me work.

A 419 enail is when your "best" friend from Nigeria has come into a lot of money but due to the untimely death of a government ministerial friend of theirs they are unable to get hold of the cash. They need the details of an off shore bank account (yours) so the money can be paid. In exchange for giving them your bank details they give you around 10% of the money. Once they have your bank details they then proceed to remove any money you have leaving you with no leg to stand on because you have given them permission to do so.

It's called a 419 because of the code given to the crime by interpol is "email fraud 419" apparently

On average I get at least 1 Nigerian email per week. I save them all in a folder and look at them from time to time, imagining how much I would be worth and pondering how fortunate I am to have so many dear friends in positions of power and authority carelessly dying all over the World and leaving me vast sums of money.

Here is a selection of spam email that I have kept:

Don't tell your spouse that you are ill-fated.
A latest sight shows that 47 percent of girls are unsatisfied
with their sexual better halfs. certainly big part of these women
would never recite their spouses that they are ill-fated.

What?
My product is a modern fat-banding appurtenance that
removes grease from the fare we sup! Contrived with
the potent fat-binding filament, the alloy
of all-biological components...

Ahh, the tokens of Geezerhood ...
Since the 21 years, your trunk tardily blocks releasing
a weighty hormone known as Human Growth Internal Secretion.
The reduction of it, that regulates grades of other hormones
in your trunk is directly responsible for many of the most
prevalent tokens of geezerhood, such as wrinkles, gray light hair,
dwindled power, and lessened intimate function.

Excellent - love the geezerhood. Ref the "419"s, I don't think it's to do with breaking into your bank account (which you couldn't do simply by getting details of the account) so much as a continuing series of scams - once you're hooked they say they want to meet, so you need to send them some air tickets, they say that the money's ready to go but they just have to bribe this one last guy, so they need some cash, etc. There's a guy I know slightly who actually fell for it and did lose a whole stack of money to these people.

Oh I've had those Nigerian scams. I've also had more emails than I care to think about purporting to be from banks I don't have an account with asking me to update my details, or purporting to be from PayPal and eBay asking the same thing.

I did read in the Guardian once about somebody who managed to hoist some Nigerian scammers with their own petard by luring them into a long correspondence and then telling them that his computer was broken and they'd have to buy him a new one in order for him to do this for them...

I am suffering from dwindled power today. Perhaps I am in need of a fat-banding appurtenance ...

I could do with a fat-banding appurtenance, if only so I can give it away afterwards and get rid of all the fat banded to it.
