I did read in the Guardian once about somebody who managed to hoist some Nigerian scammers with their own petard by luring them into a long correspondence and then telling them that his computer was broken and they'd have to buy him a new one in order for him to do this for them...

"Scam-baiting" became quite a fad a couple of years ago - there's a hilarious archive at

http://www.scamorama.com which includes minor victories such as enticing a scammer to pose with a name card declaring "IAMA DILDO" and getting another to run around the ports of Togo searching for a fictitious boat.

My own modest effort is at:

I got a creative 419 this morning - I like the convincing detail thrown in with the story on the BBC website. Now how did this chap know that I was such an honest and trustworthy person?

Greeting,

Sir,

I am contacting you believing you are a honest and trustworthy person.I believe you will not betray the confidence I am willing to repose in you, for me to have contacted you even though we've not met before.

My name is Martin Diop, the only son of late Mr.Hassan Goudalé Diop who was the chairman /President/CEO,Cacao-Cafe & Agro-Alimentary industries plc.SCAFECAO)"Bouake" and ex-owner of Polyclinic LA-MADONNE, of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire.

You can find the story on this website:http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/2269238.stm

On 19th of September 2002,a group of so called rebels took over the city of Bouake to over-throw the Government of Mr.Laurent Gbagbo the President of Cote d'Ivoire. On the 20th day morning at about 4:18am some fractions of the same group of rebels break into our house and killed our security guard and pass-through the gate entrance to the main building and took my father away to an un-known destination.

After about four hours later we found him (my father) at the road side, by then he had been totally beaten and was bleeding to death lying in the pool of his own blood. From there, we rushed him to a near by hospital and hours later he sent for my mother. So he told her that he can not make it from the doctors diagnosis, he also told her that it was because he (my father) was not from the northern part of the country that he has been treated this way and also being a political activist. And again he said he is suspecting some of his business partners for conspiracy and this sort of brutality. He also told my mother that he deposited a huge amount of money i.e US$ 10.5million dollars(Ten million five hundred thousand us dollars only)in a Finance house in the Capital city of Senegal (Dakar) and also told her where he kept the whole documents concerning this deposit that is made for investment purpose in the western world.

That same day, he (my father) gave up the ghost. Then with the help of the French soldiers, we escaped to Senegal, where we are now. I am now contacting you believing you are honest and trustworthy to help us to receive the money in your account for investment, I and my mother has decided in compensating you 20%of the total amount for your assistance .

Please do take your time to go through the mail and get back to us, so that I will simply introduce to the Finance house where the fund are being kept now for onward transfer.

I am waiting for your response.
Thanks and God bless.
Martin Diop .

More scam baiting here: http://419eater.com/

Possibly the best one is where they convince the guy to send them a picture of himself with a loaf of bread on his head :)

Today's offering is from Naerebout Kay [Schwarz@2friend.com] and has the subject line 'Re[1]: Gerena Edwards Minkov Nair', which could mean almost anything, actually. It sounds like a joint American/Russian hair removing product, but in fact is for a product called SPUR-M, which they tell us is 'the newest and safest way of pharmacy' and will allow you to increase your sexual desire and sperm volume by 500%

Quite how this should affect me I'm not sure...

I wish some bugger would send me spam about incredibly effective sleeping pills - I might even take them up on it. Ho hum.

Increasing sexual desire I can understand, but I'm at a loss why so many people seem obsessed with increasing sperm volume (average about 6cc for the human male)

If you like, I'll swap you for some of my spam offering to increase the size of my breasts.

Oddly enough DrBob, I never get those. Do you suppose there is some gremlin that sends things like this only to the wrong gender? Or is it supposed to engender some diabolical version of pester power?

Ha ha! I never thought of it that way :)

I've had the SPUR-M ones a few times. I put the "need" for such a pill down to people who base their notions of sexual normality on pornographics movies.

419ers I usually just forward to abuse@whoever, which serves to disrupt their modality. Occasionally I get all Christian on their bottoms by way of anonymous email - telling them they're going to hell for their fraudy sins. It passes the time.

I'm thinking of creating a site where people can upload email addresses of spam they've received, in the hopes that the email addresses end up getting mined by spam-crawlers and then sold back to the spammers themselves. Not sure that'll work or be worth the effort, though.

The most interesting one I saw of late was a fake courier service website that served people on ebay. I think it was a smoke screen used to divert attention away from fraudulent vendors who would take the money and run, then play the fellow-victim in subsequent communications. I only found out about it because the address on the courier's page was the building in which I worked. We'd get correspondence from people asking where their Winnie The Pooh alarm clocks were. I did a look-up on the website domain and came up with a name that, on googling, turned out to be a dead millionaire that crops up in 419 scams (and a high up in Boeing, for a bit of added authenticity). It's all smoke and mirrors, t'internet.

I get a variety of spam which I suppose stems from the fact that these people know nothing about the recipients of their rubbish - I have been offered breast implants/reductions, penis-extending pills (what?), careers in US criminal justice (I live in England), free camcorders/digital cameras/cigarettes/T-shirts/book tokens/coffee etc. etc. I am also considered eligible for Christian debt relief, mortgage refinancing throughout the USA, African-American singles bars, exclusive 'Premium' nightclub membership and work in Louisiana mental hospitals. I have been thanked for continuing to support President Bush's war in Iraq and commended for my anti-war stance. And that's just the one's that make any sense.

Surely at least one of those is libelous.
