It is almost to the point that photography is actively discouraged at school events here IMHO. It's either banned outright, you have to sign forms or there's such an atmosphere of suspicion that people feel uncomfortable and don't take them.
At dance eisteddfods there is an official photographer, who as we often find is erratic and unreliable with the photos taken (missing steps, entire parts of the routine or is focused on another part of the stage) and then charges through the nose for the photos ($12 each for the smallest one and $25 each for a digital copy on CD). flash Photos by the general public could be used to put off a competitor deliberately, anyone could be taking photos for nefarious reasons etc. Sigh. |

For a while, that was rather the attitude in the UK as well. Schools alleged either child protection or data protection (or both) as reasons why it was "illegal" to take photographs at school plays, and occasionally threatened to call the police if parents did not desist.
Since the change of government, it has been made clear in words of one syllable that it's not illegal at all, and parents have been told that they should "challenge" anyone who asserts that it is. Even so, some schools persist with such claims.
Flash photography during theatrical performances, during play at Wimbledon, and so on is just rude. Actors have been known to step out of character and shout at people who do it, just as they have at people whose cellphones ring during performances. |
