Hi

Sorry for not actually answering the question, head in the clouds...

I'm pretty sure this was covered on QI, though I'm not sure which chapter (I'm sure someone out there has all the scripts and can find it), but as a further source of information, you can see the Wiki entry here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animals_in_space

I find it quite sad that many of those animals didn't survive. I know that they died so that humans astronauts could live but I have an irrational soft spot for animals dying alone and confused.

Unfortunately sacrifices must always be made in order to advance science, it's just one of those things.

I appreciate that, and I'm broadly in favour of using animals to test essential procedures where human lives may be in danger otherwise. However, I still feel for the little monkey who plunged to the bottom of the sea and probably suffocated or dehydrated scared and alone because they couldn't retrieve the capsule.

i know that we do have to use animals for things like that but it just seems so cruel. i know that after all the scientific tests are done, they still need to actually test if life can survive in those conditions but it seems really quite cruel. i guess its better than loosing astronauts though.
