If a suitable spacecraft travels in any straight direction only, at an ever-increasing speed, and avoids crashing into anythig big enough to deflect it from its general path, where will it end up?

Oh, sorry!

I suppose this is a theoretical question.

Comments and solutions, please?

The Forum of Animal Ignorance.

;)

It depends on the shape of the universe. If it's infinite, then somewhere else; otherwise, somewhere, including possibly back where you started. Although of course if you never stop accelerating you'll never arrive.

Depends on which model of the universe you subscribe to.

1. Infinite universe - Given an infinite time you will eventually hit a black hole. Oh dear
2. Finite universe (open) - You won't reach the end as the edges of the universe are expanding at speeds that are a sizeable percentage of the speed of light. Given that the universe would speed apart with a speed to great to be retarded by gravity you will wander as lonely as cloud for all time. Unless you were really luck and get sucked up by a black hole
3. Finite universe (closed) you will be crushed. As the universe reaches it's expanion limit, it contracts and implodes back in on itself

Open universes are infinite.

Probably chasing the Event Horizon, IMO.

As the speed of expansion of the universe has increased, and theoretically we could only achieve near Light Speed, the boundaries of the universe would (given their head start) always be ahead of our spaceship, so maybe it would appear after a while that we were standing still.

If we somehow managed to break the Light Speed barrier, perhaps the effect on the laws of physics would be to propel us into a different universe.

While on the subject, we have "ordinary"laws of Physics and Quantum Physics, that we know of.

Maybe there are other laws of Physics when you reach a Macro level (As in size), or trans Light speeds.
