Well, apparently they DO drink - albeit rarely.

Here is a quote:

Koalas rarely drink water. The majority of their water comes from that contained in their food or from dew or rainwater on the surface of leaves (Phillip Island Nature Park 1998).

The statement that koalas don't drink was printed in a fact book I purchased for Miss R just last week. I thought I'd seen some information to the contrary. Seems I was right.

I do hope you'll be writing a stern letter to the publishers.

I might just send them a pack of koala droppings. ;-D

PS: They usually resort to drinking water during times of drought. There is enough, although it's a very small amount, in the eucalyptus leaves they eat (which incidentally don't make them either high or dopey!). There's a resident koala that lives in the trees bordering Miss R's school. Not bad, considering we're in suburbia!

Koalas don't need to drink - they get high on eucalyptus leaves instead.

Arf, arf, arf.

No, but they eat bark, don't they? They must sniff it, at least, being so close to it all the time. Maybe that could cause them to bark in time.

Naah, we know that Australians cannot spell, as they think beer is spelled XXXX.

The beer is XXXX, each X for the superiority of the beer. XXXX is the beer of the state I live in, Queensland, and we are very protective of our state drink.

We give the Fosters to the Poms because they're the only ones silly enough to drink it. ;-D

I rather think this was a joke (evidinced by the Arf arf arf bit), a play on drink as in relieve your thirst and drink as in to imbibe alcohol. I do not think it was a serious attempt to posit that koalas get a "high" from Eucalyptus leaves.
