Jwrigley suggests we compile a list of strange song titles and have a vote on the strangest to compile a QI 'top ten'. It occurs to me that this might be fun for the 2009 annual.
Jwrigley gave me one to start with:

Drop kick me, Jesus, through the goal posts of life.
This monstrosity was by Bobby Bare, who was one of the big names in country music in the 60s. |

You beat me to it, Izzie (And I think there is no 's' on the end of Dixie, in their name).

| "And by Our Own Hand Did Every Last Bird Lie Silent in Their Puddles, the Air Barren of Song as the Clouds Drifted Away. For Killing Their Greatest Enemy, the Locusts Noisily Thanked Us and Turned Their Jaws Toward Our Crops, Swallowing Our Greed Whole." - by Red Sparowes (who, maddeningly, have decided to do a UK tour while I'm in the States. grr.) It's an instrumental track (as is all of their work) |

| that's cheating. You can't decide to be an instrumental only band and then write the tyrics as the song title. ;) |

I'm a cranky old Yank in a clanky old tank, on the streets of Yokohama with my Honolulu Mama, doing those beat-o, beat-o, flat on my seat-o, Hirohito blues - Hoagey Carmichael (spelling?)
I believe this once had the distinction of being the longest song title ever recorded. |

If you read all the song titles together it tells the story of the "film" to which the music is the soundtrack. Same with both albums. I'm a bit pissed off about the tour too! I'm busy on 2 nights of that week already. Can't afford another gig.
My choice is one that I've mentioned in the "Games" section of the forum...

El Phantasmo and the Chicken Run Blast-O-Rama by White Zombie has always been a favourite of mine.
Oh, and the 'Suspended Animation' album by Fantomas has 30 tracks, named after each date in April. |

I think we ought to exclude country and western songs from the list as they would win hands down.
Anyhoo:
"To the Workers of the Rockford River Valley Region, I have an Idea Concerning Your Predicament, and it involves shoe string, a lavender garland, and twelve strong women" (Sufjan Stevens)
"Get balsamic vinegar...quick you fool". (Snot Patrol) oops I mean (Snow Patrol).
"When mama was a moth" (Cocteau Twins)
"I slept with someone in Fall Out Boy and all I got was this stupid song written." (Fall Out Boy) |
