| Hiiii. Thanks to everyone for your recommendations. Jenny, I've read a lot of Evelyn Waugh ("A Handful Of Dust" is a particular favourite), but not the war ones, so I'll track them down, and Samivel, I've read a little Robert Cormier and have a couple of his from the library languishing in my room somewhere, so I'll see if I can't track them down. Thanks for the recommendations, Starfish - I'm sorry, but I've read them all! I'd definitely recommend them, though. |

dotcom, how about John Marsden's Tomorrow series. They begin with Tomorrow When the War Began. They are very powerful teen novels. Not fantasy, so quite different to the other stuff you've read.
The premise is that the main character and her friends live in country Australia and are getting on with their lives when the country is invaded by a unnamed force. (It's Indonesia but never explicity stated.) Marsden was prompted to write the story from the Indonesian invasion of East Timor.
Something else I enjoyed over Christmas was The Last Family in England. Not a kids book, but the story of a family - narrated by the labrador.
Also in kids fiction The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - very powerful stuff. The whole family from my 11 yr old niece up has read it. |

Moomins are top entertainment. I had just about all the books when I was about your age, Seb, and plan to get them all again for my kids.
Mine love the books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. From Gruffalo to Tiddler (the latest), they are all ideal for bedtime reads and illustrated in a similar style to the Richard Scarry books of my childhood, with plenty going on behind the main action. |
