Q: How did Satan celebrate the end of World War Two?
A: By taking part in the London Victory Parade.
“Satan” was the nickname given to what was claimed to be, at 4,000 lbs, the biggest bomb dropped on Britain during the war.
Bristol was blitzed several times during the war. On 3rd January 1941, the main targets were Temple Meads railway station and the docks. Amid massive destruction and widespread casualties, in a raid that lasted 12 hours, “Satan” fell on Beckington Road, Knowle.
It failed to explode, but was so big (8 ft long without the fins, and more than 2 ft in diameter) and buried itself so deep in the ground, that it had to be left where it was. When in 1943 the Bomb Disposal Unit finally had sufficient respite to recover it, they had to dig down 29 ft to get it out.
Satan took a “place of honour” in the Victory Parade in London. (I don’t know where it was kept in the meantime ...)
