It is a hilarious quote, but itís one any gardener will understand; for various practical (as well as less measurable, emotional) reasons, home-grown fruit generally tastes very noticeably better than shop-bought. Presumably he was expecting a fresh banana - rather than one that had spent weeks on a container ship - would reveal the true taste of the fruit. But of course, this expectation failed to take into account variations in soil and climate.
