This is a form of fortune telling I’ve not heard of before. Anyone else know it? This is the 1930s in (I think) Glasgow.

Quote:
... textbox, a box about the size of a biscuit tin and greatly prized in evangelical homes. In it Bible texts were to be found on pieces of paper rolled up and packed tightly, but not so tightly as to prevent the easing out of a single roll of paper from its brethren. The message on each fragment of paper was awaited with awe, for here was the Word of God. The textbox may be dismissed as a kind of godly gambling, or Bible bingo. For such as [the author's relatives] it was just one of the means whereby they established communication with their Maker. Favoured guests were allowed access to the textbox.

This introduces an anecdote in which a deaf guest is offered the textbox and, having never seen one before, declines politely, explaining that he prefers a pipe rather than cigarettes, thank you.

Isn't this essentially the same as opening a Bible at random and putting your finger on a text? I've heard of that one.
