Micronations are places which resemble countries, but are not recognised by any other world government or major international organisation. Some exist online, but several do exist in the real world. The following is a list of such micronations.

  • Empire of Atlantium - Found inside Sydney, Atlantium was founded in 1981. It has its own flag, anthem, seal and currency. The country is established as a being liberal, having unrestricted international freedom of movement, the right to abortion, the right to assisted suicide, and decimal calendar reform.
  • Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands - Formed as a protest, the kingdom allows same-sex marriage and other equal rights for homosexuals. The flag is the rainbow flag and the anthem is, "I am what I am". The islands also have their own stamps. The currency is the Euro.
  • The Kingdom of Lovely - Perhaps the most famous micronation. This was the country that was founded by Danny Wallace in How to Start Your Own Country.
  • Other World Kingdom - The OWK has its own flag, anthem, coat of arms, passports, courts, police, laws, currency and capital inside the Czech Republic. It is part state, part BDSM/fetish holiday resort. The states ultimate goal is "Absolute matriarchy" - for all men to be enslaved by women.
  • Republic of Molossia - Found near Dayton, Nevada, it was first a monarchy but became a republic in 1999. It is notable for being one of the oldest micronations, being founded in 1977.
  • Principality of Sealand - Probably the micronation with the best chance of becoming a country. Sealand cosists of HM Fort Roughs, an off-shore fort located around 6 miles of the Suffolk coast. When it was founded in 1967, it was in international waters. The head of state is Prince Paddy Roy Bates. A film is being made about the micronation.

It was, and that was widely reported in the media. Since the media has been exceptionally quiet on the matter since, one can only assume that no one has yet made an acceptable offer (the "Prince" was said to be looking for €750 million).

Another micronation is Kugelmugel. It's currently found in the Viennese Praterpark. Kugelmugel exits of a giant sphere and a fence which seperates Kugelmugel from Austria. Kugelmugel has one adress, the official adress of the Kugelmugel itself. "Antifaschismus-Platz 2". Kugelmugel was founded in 1984 by Edwin Lipburger (Der Grose Demokratischen Revolutionsführer), and artist who designed the kugelmugel as well. In 1984 Austia invaded the country and arrested the founder, who refused to pay taxes. Edwin Lipburger lives now outside Austria, according to him "in exile".
Kugelmugel has it's own poststamp.

There is also another micronation in London, England. It's called Atlantica and is really new. It has it's own constitution, leader, and is in the process of setting everything else up.

Anyone heard any more about the Sealand movie?

I was once one of Roy's pirates - so I'm interested.

I have created Stigistan, a micronation dedicated to Top Gear.

Most micronations claim sovereignity under the 1933 Montevideo Convention, which states as Article 1:
Quote:
The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states.
