More bangers for your bang?

Why did Germany ban people from eating sausages during WWI?

Klaxons for any answer to do with their meat or leather, the real answer is that they needed their intestines for making the airships they used to bomb Britain. Sausages used intenstines for their casing, so were banned in order to ge the necessary supply for the German military.

In order to build the 140 airships they ended up using, the Germans had to kill more than 35 million cows - many of them while they were still young, which means more cows died during WWI than humans.

Which is why they've held a grudge ever since...

Cows are very forgiving - I haven't known one to hold a grudge at all, but coming between a German and his sausage, that is a different story.

Why are bangers so called?
I've heard a bunch of stories;
That they resemble a bludgeon, but that's US 1917-1919 slang, possibly came to the UK in WWI
That in c17th they were flavoured with gunpowder
That in WWI (again) they were so adulterated that they hissed and popped and 'banged' on the griddle
That they resemble a virile male member, also colloquially known as a 'banger'
First written recorded use is indeed just a little after WWI, so I think we can discount the gunpowder flavouring

Gunpowder flavouring of the membrum virile? Or am I getting confusticated?

I knew a chap who smoked after sex. More of a nicotine flavour.

There's a difference between cigarettes and pipes there...
